John Patrick Platten was born on 17 March 1963 and is a retired Australian rules footballer. Born in Elizabeth, South Australia, he began with Central District in the SANFL, where he won the 1984 Magarey Medal, before joining Hawthorn in 1986 after a protracted legal case. Nicknamed The Rat for his diminutive frame and tangle of curly hair, he was a gutsy rover who played 258 games and kicked 228 goals for Hawthorn, played in four premierships and shared the 1987 Brownlow Medal with Tony Lockett. He was selected All-Australian five times, made a brief return to Central District in 1998, and is an inductee of both the AFL and SANFL Halls of Fame.
