Hartwig Gauder (10 November 1954 to 22 April 2020) was a German race walker who won the gold medal in the 50 kilometres walk at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. He was born in West Germany, but his family moved to East Germany in 1960 when they inherited property at Ilmenau, so he competed for East Germany. In 1996 a virus infection of his heart left him living with an artificial heart for several months before he received a heart transplant. He later took part in the New York Marathon several times, and was once disqualified as a disabled participant for being too fast. His recovery was covered in a documentary on the German channel Phoenix. He died on 22 April 2020 while undergoing dialysis.
