David Ulliott, known throughout the poker world as Devilfish, was born on April 1, 1954, in Hull, England, and spent much of his twenties in and out of prison for offenses including armed robbery and insurance fraud before leaving that life behind. He worked for a time as a professional jeweller before turning fully to poker, where his aggressive table style and confrontational persona made him one of the most recognizable early stars of European poker. He earned his nickname after defeating the American player Men Nguyen in his first Las Vegas tournament, and went on to win a World Series of Poker bracelet along with the 2003 Jack Binion World Poker Open, defeating Phil Ivey heads up for the title. Ulliott died on April 6, 2015, in his home city of Hull, and was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame posthumously in 2017.
