Damian Andres Salas was born in 1975 in Chascomus, Argentina, and trained as a lawyer at the National University of La Plata before turning to professional poker. He recorded his first World Series of Poker cash in 2009 and spent more than a decade building a modest tournament record before his breakthrough. In 2020 Salas won the World Series of Poker Main Event, becoming the first player from Argentina ever to win the title and only the second champion from South America after Carlos Mortensen. The victory, played under a special international format because of pandemic travel restrictions that year, made him a celebrated figure within the small but growing Argentine poker community.
