The 1976 Winter Olympics were held in Innsbruck, Austria, which stepped in as host after Denver, Colorado, the originally awarded city, withdrew following a local referendum rejecting public funding for the Games. Innsbruck was able to reuse much of the infrastructure it had built for the 1964 Games. East Germany's structured winter sports program produced strong results at these Games, foreshadowing its later Winter Olympic dominance.
