Barry Sheene

Motorsport

Barry Sheene was a British professional motorcycle racer and television sports presenter, born in Bloomsbury, London, in 1950 and died in 2003. He competed in Grand Prix motorcycle racing between 1971 and 1984, mostly for the Suzuki factory team, winning two consecutive world championships in 1976 and 1977, and he remains the last British rider to win the premier class. He was the first motorcycle racer to earn commercial endorsements from outside the sport, including television advertisements for Brut cologne, and he pushed promoters for greater rider safety, objecting to the dangerous Isle of Man TT circuit. After retiring he moved to Australia to work as a commentator and property developer, and the FIM inducted him into the MotoGP Hall of Fame in 2011.
