Why was Stu Ungar called The Comeback Kid?
The name marked his 1997 Main Event win 16 years after his previous one, despite his drug abuse.
Las Vegas media dubbed Stu Ungar The Comeback Kid after his 1997 World Series of Poker Main Event win. They chose the name because of the 16-year span between his Main Event wins and because of his past drug abuse. Earlier in his career he had been called The Kid, since he looked even younger than he was when he won the 1980 Main Event as the youngest champion in its history up to that time.
