Annan was fired as head coach of the Netherlands women's team in 2022, after an investigation into accusations of verbal intimidation and of creating a culture of fear and silence. She had held the post since October 2015 and led the team to Olympic silver in 2016 and gold in 2020. The dismissal was disputed: several experienced players reported that the decision was made without consulting them, and they publicly expressed support for her, describing her as a fantastic coach. Annan chose not to comment publicly beyond a statement that she and the team differed on the approach to improvement rather than on what needed to improve. In 2022 she also became head coach of the China women's national field hockey team.
