2008 Summer Olympics

Multi-Sport Games

The 2008 Summer Olympics were held in Beijing, China, the country's first time hosting the Summer Games, accompanied by a large-scale construction program including the Beijing National Stadium, known as the Bird's Nest. American swimmer Michael Phelps won a record eight gold medals at a single Games, surpassing Mark Spitz's 1972 mark. The Games were preceded by international controversy over Tibet and human rights, and the Olympic torch relay faced protests at several stops around the world.
