The Hungary national water polo team is the most decorated national side in the history of the sport, having won more Olympic gold medals in water polo than any other country across more than a century of competition. The rivalry between Hungary and the Soviet Union produced one of the most famous moments in Olympic history, the violent "Blood in the Water" match at the 1956 Melbourne Games, played weeks after the Soviet invasion of Hungary, and water polo remains one of Hungary's most prestigious national sports.
