The Frauen-Bundesliga, meaning Women's Federal League in German, is the top level of league competition for women's association football in Germany. The German Football Association created it in 1990, modelled on the men's Bundesliga, and it was first played with northern and southern divisions that were merged into a single league in 1997. It now has fourteen teams, and a season usually runs from late summer to the end of spring with a winter break. The league has stayed semi-professional, and women-only clubs have found it hard to support themselves without corporate backing. VfL Wolfsburg has won the most championships, and German clubs are the most successful in the UEFA Women's Champions League with nine titles from four clubs.
