La Liga

Professional Leagues

La Liga, formally the Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División and also called the Primera División, is the top professional association football league in Spain and the highest level of the Spanish football league system. It is governed by the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional and contested by 20 teams over 38 matchdays. The first Primera División was played in 1929 with ten teams, and 63 teams have taken part in the championships since. Nine clubs have been Spanish champions, with Real Madrid on 36 titles and Barcelona on 29, and Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona and Real Madrid are the only clubs to have played in every season. Spanish clubs have won more UEFA Champions League, Europa League, Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup titles than clubs from any other league, and La Liga has led the UEFA coefficient rankings for more years than any other league.
