Major League Baseball, usually shortened to MLB, is the top professional baseball league in North America and is widely regarded as the premier baseball league in the world. It is made up of 30 teams split equally between the National League and the American League, 29 of them in the United States and one in Canada, and it is headquartered in New York City. Each team plays 162 games a season, beginning around the end of March or start of April, after which six teams from each league enter a four-round postseason in October that ends with the World Series, a best-of-seven series between the two league champions first played in 1903. The National League was formed in 1876 and the American League in 1900, and the two stayed legally separate entities until they merged into a single organization in 2000. MLB also oversees Minor League Baseball and the MLB Draft League, and it co-manages the World Baseball Classic with the World Baseball Softball Confederation.
