The 1908 Summer Olympics were held in London, England, originally awarded to Rome before financial pressures forced Italy to withdraw. The Games introduced the now-standard marathon distance of 26 miles 385 yards, set to allow the race to finish in front of the royal box at White City Stadium, after Italian runner Dorando Pietri was disqualified for receiving assistance after collapsing near the finish line. London 1908 was also the first Games with a national team parade at the opening ceremony resembling the modern format.
