The 1900 Summer Olympics were held in Paris, France, as part of the 1900 World's Fair, and were run over several months rather than a compact festival, which left many competitors unaware they were even taking part in an Olympic event. Women competed for the first time, in tennis and golf, with Charlotte Cooper becoming the first individual female Olympic champion. The disorganized scheduling and event list, which included now-unfamiliar contests, made the 1900 Games one of the most chaotic in Olympic history.
