Gustav Flatow

Gustav Felix Flatow (7 January 1875 to 29 January 1945) was a German gymnast, born in Berent, West Prussia, who competed at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens and the 1900 Games in Paris. He entered the parallel bars, horizontal bar, vault, pommel horse and rings events but won no individual medals, unlike his cousin and teammate Alfred Flatow. Both were members of the German team that won the team parallel bars and team horizontal bar events, so Gustav earned two gold medals. He then retired to run the textile company he founded in 1899. Being Jewish, he fled to the Netherlands after 1933, was later deported to Theresienstadt and died there in 1945. He was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1989, and Berlin named Flatowallee after the cousins in 1997.
