The 1992 Winter Olympics were held in Albertville, France, the last Winter Games held in the same calendar year as the Summer Olympics before the IOC staggered the two events onto alternating even years. The Unified Team, representing several former Soviet republics after the dissolution of the USSR, competed together at a Winter Games for the only time. Newly independent Baltic states Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania also competed separately at the Winter Olympics for the first time since before the Second World War.
