The Japan Sumo Association (Nihon Sumo Kyokai) is the governing body for professional sumo wrestling in Japan, reorganized into its modern institutional form in 1925 building on centuries of earlier sumo tradition, and headquartered at the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena in Tokyo. It regulates professional sumo's ranking system, stables and tournament calendar, including the six annual Grand Sumo tournaments (honbasho), and oversees the sport's distinctive Shinto-derived ceremonial traditions and rikishi (wrestler) career structure.
