The Gaelic Athletic Association, known as the GAA, is an Irish amateur sporting and cultural organisation founded in 1884 to promote and preserve Ireland's native games. It looks after hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders through a structure of clubs, county boards and provincial councils, and it organises competitions from local divisions up to the All-Ireland championships. Beyond sport it backs Irish music, dance, song and language through its Scor competitions. By 2014 it reported more than 500,000 members. The women's codes, camogie and ladies' Gaelic football, are run by the independent but closely linked Camogie Association of Ireland and Ladies' Gaelic Football Association.
