The AFL Commission is the board of directors that governs the Australian Football League. It was formed in 1985, when the league, then named Victorian Football League Limited, created it as a body independent of its member clubs to operate the competition, and in 1993 its independent commissioners took over from a board of directors made up of representatives of the then fifteen member clubs. The league's constitution calls the AFL the keeper of the code, responsible for the sport of Australian football, and the league operates the national competition, the All-Australian team and the Australian Football Hall of Fame, along with player pathways such as the AFL draft and the AFL Academy. The commission also approves new club franchise licences, which is how the competition expands.
