Warhammer is a British tabletop miniature wargame with a medieval fantasy theme, formally titled Warhammer: The Mass Combat Fantasy Roleplaying Game and later Warhammer: Fantasy Battle. Bryan Ansell, Richard Halliwell and Rick Priestley created it, and Games Workshop first published it in 1983. Players use miniature models to represent warriors on a model battlefield of buildings, trees, hills and other terrain, take turns moving their forces and settle fights through dice rolls and simple arithmetic. The setting adds wizards, dragons and magic to medieval warfare and draws on Tolkien, Poul Anderson and Michael Moorcock. It was the first commercial miniature wargame built around proprietary models, was supported for about thirty years through eight editions, and was replaced by Age of Sigmar in 2015 before The Old World revived it in 2024.
