Mastermind is a code-breaking board game for two players, invented in Israel in 1970 by postmaster and telecommunications expert Mordecai Meirowitz. One player, the codemaker, sets a hidden pattern of colored pegs, and the other, the codebreaker, tries to guess it within a limited number of turns, receiving feedback pegs after each guess that show how many colors and positions were correct. The game descends from an older pencil-and-paper game called Bulls and Cows. Invicta Plastics began manufacturing Mastermind commercially in 1971, and it has remained continuously in production since, played in matches lasting roughly ten to thirty minutes with negligible reliance on chance.
