The NASCAR Cup Series is the top racing series of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing and the most prestigious stock car racing series in the United States. It began in 1949 as the Strictly Stock Division, was known as the Grand National Division from 1950 to 1970, and then carried the names of successive title sponsors, among them Winston Cup, Nextel Cup, Sprint Cup and Monster Energy NASCAR Cup, before becoming simply the NASCAR Cup Series from the 2020 season. The champion is decided by a points system in which points are awarded by finishing position in each race and its stages. The series has strong roots in the Southeastern United States, where about half of the races in its 36-race season are held, and its most prestigious event is the Daytona 500.
