The EuroLeague is a European men's professional basketball club competition, widely recognized as the top and most prestigious men's basketball league in Europe. It has 20 teams, 16 of them holding long-term licences and wild cards, which makes it a semi-closed league. It was first organized by FIBA in 1958 as the FIBA European Champions Cup, renamed the FIBA EuroLeague in 1996, and then run by ULEB from 2000 and by Euroleague Basketball from the 2000-01 season. The FIBA European Champions Cup and the EuroLeague are regarded as the same competition, the change of name being a re-branding. Twenty-two clubs have won the title, 15 of them more than once, and Real Madrid lead with 11 titles ahead of CSKA Moscow with 8 and Panathinaikos with 7. Virtus Bologna won the first title of the Euroleague Basketball era in 2000-01.
