Wolfgang Overath, born on 29 September 1943, is a former West German footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. He spent his entire professional career with 1. FC Köln, appearing 765 times between 1962 and 1977 and scoring 287 goals, and he won the inaugural Bundesliga title with the club in 1964 and the German Cup in 1968. For the West German national side he won 81 caps between 1963 and 1974 and scored 17 goals. He played in three World Cup finals tournaments, finishing runner-up in 1966, third in 1970 and champion in 1974, when West Germany beat the Netherlands 2-1 at home. He is remembered for his passing ability, technique and outstanding left foot, and he later served as president of 1. FC Köln from 2004 until his resignation in November 2011.
