Wolfgang Behrendt was a bantamweight amateur boxer from East Germany, born on 14 June 1936 and died on 22 June 2026. He won the gold medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics, competing for the United Team of Germany, the combined German squad of that Games. With that victory he became the first Olympic champion for East Germany. His title in the bantamweight division, one of the lighter classes of Olympic boxing, is the achievement for which he is remembered, and it links the history of the German Olympic movement in the divided postwar period with the sport of amateur boxing.
