William Arthur Murphy was a lacrosse player who won a silver medal with the St. Louis Amateur Athletic Association at the 1904 Summer Olympics, although he spent most of his life in Canada. Born in Quebec City on 23 May 1867, he moved to Ottawa at a young age and worked with the Ottawa Police Force. During the First World War he served with the Dominion Police Force, the federal predecessor of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He later worked for the E. B. Eddy Company, a pulp and paper concern, and was a foreman at the time of his retirement in 1940. Olympedia lists him with the United States because he represented a St. Louis club. He died in Ottawa on 17 April 1957.
