Wilbert Robinson

Bat-and-Ball Sports

Wilbert "Uncle Robbie" Robinson was an American baseball catcher and manager, born in Bolton, Massachusetts, in 1864 and died on 8 August 1934. As a catcher he played for the Philadelphia Athletics and for the Baltimore Orioles, where he was a teammate of John McGraw, and on 10 June 1892 he had seven hits in seven at-bats in a nine-inning game, a record equalled only by Rennie Stennett in 1975. He topped .300 five times and hit .273 over his career. He managed the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1914 to 1931, winning National League pennants in 1916 and 1920, finishing with a managerial record of 1,399 wins and 1,398 losses over 19 seasons, and sportswriters called the team the Robins in his honor. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945.
