Walter Schmidt, born on August 7, 1948, is a retired hammer thrower from West Germany. He was one of the leading athletes in his discipline during the 1970s and set two world records in the hammer throw. At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, he finished in fifth place.
