Walter Jerry Payton, nicknamed Sweetness, was an American professional football running back who lived from 1953 to 1999 and played 13 seasons for the Chicago Bears after an All-American college career at Jackson State University. He won the 1977 Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player Award and Super Bowl XX with the 1985 Chicago Bears, retiring after the 1987 season having rushed for at least 1,200 yards in 10 of his 13 seasons and holding NFL career records for rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, carries, yards from scrimmage and all purpose yards. A nine time Pro Bowl selection, he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993 and named to both the NFL's 75th and 100th anniversary all time teams.
