Vladimir Kramnik is a Russian chess grandmaster who was Classical World Chess Champion from 2000 to 2006 and the 14th undisputed World Chess Champion from 2006 to 2007. He defeated Garry Kasparov in 2000 to win the Classical title, defended it against Peter Leko in 2004, and unified the title by defeating FIDE champion Veselin Topalov in 2006. He lost the title to Viswanathan Anand in 2007 and reached a peak rating of 2817 in October 2016, the joint eighth highest of all time. He publicly announced his retirement as a professional player in January 2019.
