Tony Hawk, nicknamed the Birdman, is an American professional skateboarder and entrepreneur who was born on 12 May 1968 in San Diego, California, and owns the skateboard company Birdhouse. A pioneer of modern vertical skateboarding, he completed the first documented 900 trick in 1999 at the X Games, on his twelfth attempt, and he licensed a video game series that began that same year. He won ten X Games gold medals between 1995 and 2003 and retired from professional competition in 2003. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential skateboarders of all time, and his Skatepark Project helps build skateparks in underprivileged areas around the world.
