Teofilo Stevenson was a Cuban amateur boxer who lived from 1952 to 2012, competing from 1966 to 1986 and compiling a record of 302 wins, 22 losses and 8 draws. He won Olympic gold in the heavyweight division at three consecutive Games, in 1972, 1976 and 1980, one of only three boxers ever to achieve that feat, added three World Amateur Boxing Championships gold medals, in 1974, 1978 and 1986, and received the Val Barker Trophy as the outstanding boxer of the 1972 Munich Olympics. He turned down lucrative offers to turn professional, including a reported five-million-dollar offer to fight Muhammad Ali, reportedly asking what a million dollars was worth compared to the love of eight million Cubans.
