Steve Redgrave is a retired British rower who won gold medals at five consecutive Olympic Games between 1984 and 2000, a feat unmatched by any other endurance sport athlete. He achieved this while managing ulcerative colitis, diagnosed in 1992, and type 2 diabetes, diagnosed in 1997. He also won nine World Rowing Championship titles and three Commonwealth Games golds. Knighted in 2001, he is widely regarded as one of Britain's greatest Olympians and was ranked 36th in a BBC poll of the 100 Greatest Britons.
