Stan Coveleski was an American baseball pitcher, born in 1889 at Shamokin, Pennsylvania, who left school at twelve to work in the coal mines and was the youngest of five ballplaying brothers. His brother Harry also pitched for many years in the major leagues. After a brief stay with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1912 he joined the Cleveland Indians for good in 1916 and later pitched for the Washington Senators and the New York Yankees. In the 1920 World Series he won three complete games for Cleveland with an earned run average of 0.67. A control pitcher who relied on the spitball, he finished with 215 wins and 142 losses and an earned run average of 2.89, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1969.
