Bat-and-Ball Sports

Softball is a bat-and-ball sport closely related to baseball, played with a larger ball and an underarm pitching motion on a smaller field, most commonly contested in a fast-pitch format at the elite level. It was invented in Chicago in 1887, originally as an indoor variant of baseball, before evolving into an outdoor sport with standardized rules by the mid-20th century. Women's fast-pitch softball was part of the Summer Olympic program from 1996 to 2008 and again at the 2020 and 2028 Games, and the sport is governed internationally by the World Baseball Softball Confederation.
