Sergej Barbarez

Sergej Barbarez is a Bosnian professional football manager and former player, born on 17 September 1971, who is the manager of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team. During his playing career he was mainly used as a second striker, though he was also deployed as an attacking midfielder or left winger. He began at his hometown club Velez Mostar, moved to Germany with Hannover 96 in 1992, then played for Union Berlin, Hansa Rostock and Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga before joining Hamburger SV in 2000, where he scored 65 goals in 174 Bundesliga games and is considered among the club's all-time greats. He shared the 2000-01 Bundesliga top scorer title with Ebbe Sand on 22 goals, left Hamburg in 2006 and retired at Bayer Leverkusen in 2008. He earned 47 caps and scored 17 goals for Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1998 and 2006, captaining the side from 2004 to 2006, and was appointed its head coach in April 2024.
