Josef Dieter "Sepp" Maier, born on 28 February 1944, is a German former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Bayern Munich and the West Germany national team. He is regarded as one of football's greatest goalkeepers and was nicknamed "Die Katze von Anzing", the cat from Anzing, for his fast reflexes, agility, flexibility, speed and consistency. He played 709 matches over seventeen seasons and was Bayern's all-time record appearance holder until Thomas Müller passed him in 2024. Besides shot-stopping he was known for dominating his penalty area, and his sense of humour and personality made him a fan favourite.
