Samuel Reshevsky

Samuel Herman Reshevsky, born Szmul Rzeszewski, was a Polish chess prodigy who became a leading American chess grandmaster. He was a contender for the World Chess Championship from the mid-1930s to the late 1960s, a span of more than three decades at the top of the game. He tied for third place in the 1948 World Chess Championship tournament, tied for second in the 1953 Candidates tournament, and was still a Candidate as late as 1968. He was an eight-time winner of the US Chess Championship, a total that ties him with Bobby Fischer for the all-time record. Reshevsky was an accountant by profession and also worked as a chess writer. He was born on 26 November 1911 and died on 4 April 1992.
