Rustam Kasimdzhanov, born December 5, 1979, in Tashkent, is an Uzbek chess grandmaster, a title he earned in 1997. He was FIDE World Chess Champion from 2004 to 2005, having won the FIDE World Chess Championship knockout tournament, and he was also Asian Chess Champion in 1998 and won a gold medal in men's rapid chess at the 2010 Asian Games, reaching a peak FIDE rating of 2715 in May 2015. Beyond his own competitive record he has become a prominent chess second and coach, assisting Viswanathan Anand during World Championship matches in 2008, 2010 and 2012, and later training World Championship candidates Sergey Karjakin and Fabiano Caruana as well as young Indian grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi.
