He was FIDE World Chess Champion from 2002 to 2004, winning the title at 18 years and 104 days old, which made him the youngest world champion in the sport's history, though the championship was split between rival organizations at the time. Beyond his world title reign he won the Ukrainian Chess Championship in 2011, reached his peak FIDE rating of 2764 in July 2011, and was a runner-up in the FIDE Chess World Cup twice, in 2005 and 2009, demonstrating sustained strength across a long career of tournament competition.
