Ron Vlaar is a retired Dutch footballer, born in 1985, who played as a centre-back for AZ Alkmaar, Feyenoord and Aston Villa across a seventeen-year professional career. He came through AZ Alkmaar's youth system before establishing himself at Feyenoord, where he won the KNVB Cup in 2007-08 and served as captain, then moved to the Premier League with Aston Villa, whom he also captained and helped reach the 2014-15 FA Cup final. Vlaar returned to AZ Alkmaar in 2015 and played there until his retirement in 2021. He represented the Netherlands from 2005 to 2014, winning the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in both 2006 and 2007, earning 32 senior caps and helping the national team win bronze at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Known for his defensive solidity, Vlaar was nicknamed Concrete Ron by teammates at Aston Villa.
