Paul John Gascoigne, nicknamed Gazza and born on 27 May 1967, is an English former professional footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. He is regarded as one of the best playmakers of his generation and one of the finest English players of all time, and his popularity during his career became known as Gazzamania. Born and raised in Gateshead, he turned professional with Newcastle United in 1984, then played for Tottenham Hotspur, winning the FA Cup in 1991, Lazio, Rangers, where he won two league titles, Middlesbrough, Everton, Burnley, Gansu Tianma and Boston United. He won 57 caps for England between 1988 and 1998 and scored ten goals, reaching fourth place at the 1990 FIFA World Cup and the semi-finals of Euro 96. His later life was marked by severe mental health problems and alcoholism.
