Ottmar Hitzfeld, born on 12 January 1949, is a German former professional footballer who became one of the most successful managers in the history of the game. As a player he was a striker, winning two Swiss Super League titles with Basel in 1971-72 and 1972-73 and finishing as the league top scorer in the second of those seasons. He earned six caps for the West Germany national team, all of them at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.
