Olga Fikotová

Olga Connolly, born Olga Fikotova on 13 November 1932 and died on 12 April 2024, was a Czechoslovak and later American discus thrower. She is best known for winning gold at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, and for her romance across Cold War barriers with the American hammer throw gold medalist Hal Connolly. Her career therefore carried a political and personal story alongside the athletic result, and she is remembered as much for crossing the divide between the Cold War divide as for her victory in the discus.
