Nona Gaprindashvili, born May 3, 1941, in Zugdidi, Georgian SSR, is a Georgian chess grandmaster renowned for her aggressive playing style. She dominated women's chess for sixteen years as Women's World Chess Champion from 1962 to 1978, and in 1978 became the first woman ever awarded the FIDE title of Grandmaster, a title normally open only to the strongest players regardless of gender. She built an extensive record of competitive games against male opponents as well as women, was inducted into the World Chess Hall of Fame in 2013, and has remained active in Georgian public life, notably filing and settling a defamation lawsuit against Netflix in 2021 and 2022 over her portrayal in the series The Queen's Gambit.
