Nia Künzer

Nia Tsholofelo Künzer is a retired German women's football player, born on 18 January 1980 in Mochudi, Botswana, where her parents were on a development aid posting, and raised in Wetzlar-Garbenheim in Germany. She began as a high jumper, played for Eintracht Wetzlar and VfB Gießen, and from 1997 was with 1. FFC Frankfurt as a defender or midfielder. As a member of the German women's national team at the 2003 World Cup she scored the golden goal that beat Sweden 2-1 in the final, the only golden goal ever to decide a Women's World Cup final, and it became the first women's Goal of the Year in German football. Repeated cruciate ligament injuries kept her from the 2004 Olympic Games and led her to leave the national team in 2006, and she retired from professional football in July 2008. She later became a television sports commentator and Das Erste's main pundit for national team and major women's tournaments.
