Newsy Lalonde (1887 to 1970) was a Canadian forward in professional ice hockey and a professional lacrosse player, regarded as one of the greatest players of both sports in the first half of the twentieth century. He picked up his nickname from his early work as a reporter and then a printer for newspapers in Cornwall and Woodstock, Ontario. He began his hockey career with the Cornwall Victorias in 1904, played in the National Hockey Association and the National Hockey League, and starred for the Montreal Canadiens, whom he led as player-coach to their first Stanley Cup in 1916. His goal-scoring in the 1919 Stanley Cup playoffs set three NHL records that still stand more than a century later. He also played for the Vancouver Millionaires of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association, leading that league in scoring in its first year, and for the Saskatoon Sheiks of the WCHL.
