Nawal El Moutawakel is a Moroccan former track and field athlete born April 15, 1962, in Casablanca. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles she won the inaugural women's 400 metre hurdles event, becoming the first Moroccan, the first Arab, the first African and the first woman from a Muslim-majority nation to win an Olympic gold medal, and she added further medals at the African Championships and the Mediterranean Games in the same event. She has served on the International Olympic Committee since 1998 and was elected an IOC vice president in 2016, a position to which she was re-elected and held through 2024.
