Mutaz Essa Barsham is a Qatari track and field athlete who competes in the high jump, born on 24 June 1991 in Doha to a Sudanese family. He took up the event at age 15 and trained at the Aspire Academy in Doha, later working under the coach Stanislaw Szczyrba. He jumps off his left foot using the Fosbury Flop technique. His personal best of 2.43 metres makes him the second highest jumper of all time and the holder of the Asian record. He won world titles in 2017 in London, 2019 in Doha and 2022 in Eugene. At the Olympics he took bronze in London in 2012, later promoted to silver after a disqualification, silver in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, a shared gold in Tokyo in 2020 and bronze in Paris in 2024, completing a full set of medals. He was also Asian Indoor and World Junior champion in 2010.
